Although writing is a critical skill in personal, educational, and professional domains, its role in language education in the United States is unclear and several recent studies have identified presentational writing as the most challenging linguistic modality to teach and the one that instructors feel students struggle with the most. In this workshop, we will explore our beliefs and practices related to writing in a second or foreign language; discuss insights from research on the skills and knowledge necessary to write effectively in another language; and I will describe an integrated pedagogy for teaching second language writing. The final stage of the workshop will include a reflective activity in which participants will consider how they might integrate elements of Design pedagogy into their own teaching and the steps needed to do so.
