Led by Kathleen Burns, this workshop offers an introduction to science fiction and related genres including speculative fiction, cli-fi and Afrofuturism. We will explore sci-fi as a genre that renders the unfamiliar familiar and the familiar uncanny, exposing the deep-rooted assumptions we hold about ourselves and our world(s). In this workshop, participants will engage in speculative world-building exercises and create their own sci-fi microfictions.
Kathleen Burns is a PhD student in the English Department at Duke. Her work explores the strange power of the vegetal world through the symbiotic relationship between science and literature.
