Global surgery interventions encounter a multitude of challenges from human resource shortages to lack of adequate supplies to perform surgery. An oftentimes overlooked aspect of global surgery is perioperative care which can significantly impact surgical outcomes. This presentation will describe the efforts that Duke Global Neurosurgery and Neurology (DGNN) has embarked on in Uganda to improve neurosurgical patient outcomes by focusing on perioperative care. We will highlight the development and progress made by our Bass Connections team which has focused on three key aspects of perioperative care: infection control, medication management and patient caretaker education.
