Informal Caregiver Support Policies & Use of VA Health and Vocational Rehabilitation Services

In this research seminar, Dr. Shepherd-Banigan will discuss her project, which is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Systems for Action Program and examines how VA health system support for informal caregivers impacts the ability of Veterans to engage in health and vocational rehabilitation services. Using econometric causal inference and qualitative data collection and analysis, she and her team, including Drs. Courtney Van Houtven, Valerie Smith, Nina Sperber, Terri Pogoda, and Kevin McKenna, MPH, assessed this relationship and found that caregiver support policies impact the Veteran's use of some vocational rehabilitation services. They also elucidated the role that caregivers play in connecting their loved ones to the VA's health and non-health services.

Dr. Shepherd-Banigan's research focuses on mental health, aging, and health services research methods that improve the health, emotional well-being, and social functioning of adults with mental and physical disabilities. Her research centers on how parental disability and caregiving affect the health of children, how to integrate family caregivers into the health system, and how to incorporate family-centered innovations into health care.
