Talking About Your Research: A 5-Session Training Program [Application required]
Duke graduate students are cutting-edge researchers, but it can often be hard to talk about that work with people outside your field. Whether you're at a department retreat, a conference, a networking event, or at an interview, it's important to succinctly describe your project in a way the audience can understand.
In this six-week series of workshops, Duke PhD and Master's students will learn effective communication strategies to develop a 3-minute presentation of their research. Each student will also receive a high-quality video of their presentation for use in presenting their work, teaching, and applying for jobs. Students will need to commit to attending all of the first 5 weeks of the series:
-Week 1 (3/19): introductions, body language
-Week 2 (3/26): crafting your overall message and content
-Week 3 (4/2): methods to communicate your message, voice
-Week 4 (4/9): visual aids, practicing your presentation
-Week 5 (4/16): final presentations to broad audience, recorded in high-quality video
Master's and Doctoral students of the Duke Graduate School, Divinity School, and Biostatistics Program in the Medical School are welcome to apply. Students should be actively conducting a research project that they will use as the material for their presentation.
