Myanmar Business Environment Index 2023: Business Perceptions in Post-Coup Myanmar
The Myanmar Business Environment Index (MBEI) was launched in 2018 to provide a snapshot of local economic governance and private-sector development in Myanmar's states and regions. The original MBEI project consisted of two nationwide business perception surveys, conducted in 2018 and 2020, and two smaller surveys in 2020 on the impact of Covid-19 on businesses. In 2023, The Asia Foundation used the data from these four previous surveys as a baseline for the MBEI 2023 interim survey. The 2023 survey was specifically designed to understand the impact of the 2021 coup d'état.
The MBEI captures key aspects of local economic governance that businesses are currently facing in Myanmar and provides evidence to understand how the private sector currently views and interacts with the de facto authorities and to identify major challenges faced by businesses.
