Tuesday, March 25th at 5:30 p.m.

On the occasion of the semaine de la francophonie dedicated to Lebanon, the CFFS, in partnership with Villa Albertine, the Duke Department of Romance Studies, the Duke Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute, welcomes Hyam Yared.

The author will join us for Literature, Witness of Collective Memory, a bilingual discussion about the relationship between literature, activism, and collective memory which integrates the CFFS's Plural Feminisms from the Francophone World Series.

The public lecture will convene in the Ahmadieh Family Lecture Hall, located in Bay 4 of Smith Warehouse, and will be accessible to both English and French speakers.

This event is supported by the Schiff Humanities Fund.

Hyam Yared is a Lebanese poet and novelist based in Beirut where she lives with her family. She was one of the Beirut 39 group-chosen as the best 39 writers under the age of 39 in 2009-who were identified as part of a collaboration between the Hay Festival, Beirut UNESCO world book capital, the British Council and Banipal magazine. In her critically acclaimed works, including Tout est halluciné (Fayard, 2016), a finalist for the Prix France Télévision, as well as Sous la tonnelle (S.Wespieser, 2009), La Malédiction (Equateurs, 2012), Nos longues années en tant que filles (Flammarion, 2020), and Implosions (Equateurs, 2021), Hyam Yared establishes the link between the intimate and political spheres, questioning ways of being in the world by contrasting the notion of collective identities with the psychological dimension of individuals.
Yared has also been the president the PEN Association Lebanon that works for freedom of expression for all writers.
