Presents:
A SCHOLAR'S DIARY: 50 YEARS OF SCHOLARSHIP AND ENGAGEMENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Violence, Dialogue, Hope
BRUCE LAWRENCE
Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Professor of Religious Studies, Emeritus
Duke University
The subtitle of the talk, "Violence, Dialogue, Hope," will take the audience on a reflective journey through 50 years of scholarship and engagement in the Middle East. Professor Lawrence will specifically focus on three pivotal moments in modern history-the Iranian Revolution (1979), the 9/11 attacks, and the recent Hamas-Israel conflict (2023). These events will be intertwined with insights from his professional life, which will be divided into three key phases: pre-Duke, his 40 years at Duke, and post-Duke experiences. The talk will include a brief video segment followed by a PowerPoint presentation, inviting the audience to explore themes of conflict, dialogue, and hope.
Bruce is the author of numerous publications on religion and Islam, including The Qur'an: A Biography (2006), New Faiths, Old Fears (2002), and Sufi Martyrs of Love (2002). He has written Messages to the World: The Statements of Osama Bin Laden (2015), On Violence: A Reader (2007), and The Qur'an: A Verse Translation (2024).
