Cosmology Seminar Series

Distance measurements with SN Ia have played a central role in modern cosmology, providing the first direct observational evidence for an accelerating universe and the existence of the mysterious dark energy. Remarkably, this discovery was made with only several dozen SN Ia. Over the past several decades, we discovered thousands more SN Ia out to z>1 that gave us a better understanding of these objects as standardizable candles. The focus is now shifting to measuring the dark energy equation-of-state parameter and its possible evolution with redshift and controlling systematic uncertainties. I will discuss the current state of SN Ia cosmology and the exciting prospects with future large-scale surveys with Rubin's LSST and the Roman Space Telescope.
