Event Description:
Academic freedom and the freedom to learn are under threat on college campuses as never before. Drawing on her work within the rapidly growing DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) industry in higher education and on the "divisive concepts" legislation in Florida, Amna Khalid will discuss how these threats are emerging from both inside and outside academia. Khalid will emphasize the importance of defending academic freedom and making a positive case for it in order to preserve American higher education.

Guest Speaker:
Amna Khalid is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. She specializes in modern South Asian history, the history of medicine, and the global history of free expression. During the 2022-2023 academic year, Amna was a Fellow at the University of California's National Center for Free Speech and Civic Engagement, where she focused on the threats to academic freedom in Florida alongside her colleague Jeff Snyder. Based on their interviews with Florida faculty, they submitted an amicus brief supporting the plaintiffs challenging the Stop WOKE Act.
