Reception: The Road to Baku
The next major United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) will take place in November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. The stakes are high. COP29 will grapple with thorny issues around financial commitments to help low- and middle-income countries address climate challenges, clarifying the rulebook for trading carbon credits internationally, advancing specifics for the Global Goal on Adaptation, and more. Perhaps most importantly, COP29 lands just prior to the early-2025 deadline for countries to submit their new nationally determined contributions for addressing climate change-which are the backbone of global efforts.
Duke University is involved in COP29 on multiple fronts, from faculty and expert participation to the wide-ranging impacts of our alumni to a delegation of Duke students that will be attending. This reception will bring these communities and their broader networks together to informally discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by COP29 and how we can work together to advance progress.
The reception is organized by Duke University's Office of Climate and Sustainability, Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment & Sustainability, and the Nicholas School for the Environment.
