Beyond AI Slop: Responsible AI Use in Literature Reviews and Publishing (RCR)

If AI can summarize hundreds of papers in seconds, what's left for you (the researcher) to do? In this RCR session, we'll examine the growing landscape of AI-generated scholarly content (including so-called "AI slop") and explore how it affects literature reviews and scholarly publication. We'll examine the limitations and biases that generative AI can introduce or amplify (e.g. hallucinations, sycophancy, and opaque provenance) and discuss practical strategies for avoiding them. We'll also discuss emerging publisher expectations regarding transparency and disclosure of AI use by authors. As AI changes what expertise looks like, attendees will learn strategies for critically assessing AI-generated outputs, recognizing potential biases, and making informed decisions about when and how AI can be used responsibly in the research process.

Learning Objectives:

- Practice strategies for critically assessing AI-generated content for hallucination and bias
- Learn best practices and approaches to disclosing AI use in research and writing

This workshop is eligible for 2 hours of Graduate School RCR Credit (GS714). To receive RCR credit, attendees will be expected to attend the entire session and participate in interactive learning activities throughout the session.
