Wrestling with the Angel: On Art and its Afterlife

"The Afterlife of Angels" is inspired by the remarkable survival of one idiosyncratic little modernist drawing and the posthumously published writings of the German-Jewish intellectual who owned, cherished and, with one powerfully prescient passage, transfigured the image into an enduring emblem of historical witness for the postwar period.
