Good Friday Tenebrae Service

A split-screen graphic. The left side shows the interior of the chapel, focusing on the high altar’s intricate, gold-toned wood carvings and religious figures. A silver cross draped in black cloth stands prominently in front of a patterned backdrop. The backs of a few congregants are visible at the bottom. The right side is a solid navy blue block with the white text "GOOD FRIDAY TENEBRAE" and the Duke University Chapel logo at the bottom.

The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery, Dean, Duke University Chapel

Tenebrae (Latin for "shadows" or "darkness") is a solemn observance of Jesus's passion and death. The service marks Jesus's journey to Golgotha and allows for extended meditation through proclamation of the word in scripture and sermon, as well as through music, increasing darkness, and silent reflection. We gather on the evening of Good Friday to enter into the dramatic narrative of Jesus's betrayal, arrest, and crucifixion, and to reflect on God's sacrificial love.

Free parking is available in the Bryan Center garage at 125 Science Drive.
