Chemistry Seminar Presented by Dr. Smitha Pillai: "The Fully Online BS and BA Degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry at Arizona State University"
"The Fully Online BS and BA Degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry at Arizona State University"
In fall 2017, Arizona State University launched the first fully online BS degree in biochemistry and has since added three additional BS and BA degrees and two minors. The programs have undergone phenomenal growth and now enroll over 1000 chemistry and biochemistry majors. Fully online chemistry biochemistry courses at ASU now serve over 2000 students per semester. In this presentation we will give an overview of how the degree programs work, in particular the laboratory courses. We will also discuss the very different demographics of the online student population and the role the online degree programs have played in increasing access to college education for diverse populations. Finally, we will describe programs designed to increase online student success, including peer-mentoring and access to authentic chemistry and biochemistry research experiences.
