Advent Lessons and Carols

Advent Lessons and Carols
Thursday, December 14, 2023
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Based on the formula made famous by the Christmas Lessons and Carols from King's College, Cambridge, this service follows a similar pattern of readings, choral anthems, and congregational hymns. It begins in a darkened Chapel, with the choir singing and processing by candlelight. The service lasts about one hour. The music, led by the Chapel's Vespers Ensemble, includes settings by Palestrina, de Wert, Hassler, Manz, Britten, and Howells; stirring hymns for Advent include: "Comfort, comfort ye my people," "Hark! A thrilling voice is sounding," "Come, thou long-expected Jesus," "On Jordan's Bank," and "Lo! He comes with clouds descending."
