The Effects of Community-Based and Civic Engagement in Higher Education

This session presents findings from AAC&U's recently published research report on the effects of students' community-based and civic engagement in higher education. By targeting only those studies with the highest levels of generalizability and by looking inclusively across engaged practices and student outcomes, the report's findings are intended to provide the broadest evidence base to date on why students' engagement in community-based and civic experiences are so effective. The report's authors will also engage participants in a discussion around recommendations for advancing the evidence base, particularly for underserved students, and for applying findings to campus efforts to advance their civic missions.
