Jane Lubchenco, PhD, is a world-renowned environmental scientist and marine ecologist who champions the stronger engagement of scientists with society and finding durable solutions to environmental challenges.

A University Distinguished Professor at Oregon State University (OSU), she served as under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) from 2009 to 2013.

She was an inaugural member of President Obama's 'Science Dream Team,' and served as the first U.S. science envoy for the ocean from 2014 to 2016. Sen. Ron Wyden called Lubchenco 'the bionic woman of good science.' Beginning in February 2021, she is on loan from OSU to the White House to serve as the deputy director for climate and the environment in the Office of Science and Technology Policy.

Special thanks to Ritson and Julie Ferguson for endowing this important lecture series at the Nicholas School of the Environment.
