The Israeli Documentary Series presents: To Cure Longing (2022, runtime 65 min, director: Artyom Dubitski).

A young immigrant's inquiry into the life of his family in Russia and Ukraine before reaching Israel. The filmmaker is taken on a life changing journey that forces him to cope with transgenerational trauma, when at the age of 30, he travels along with his father to Russia to meet his grandmother for the first time. He himself handles the camera and directs the conversations in a subtle way, achieving moments of Chekhovian intensity.

Winner of the Best Documentary Film, Jerusalem Film Festival, 2022.

This semester, the screenings are in dialogue with one another and present two very different stories about fatherhood and filiality in the late 20th and early 21st century. The Artist's Daughter, Oil on Canvas, is essentially an experiment in the ways in which art - cinema and visual arts - can offer a substitute and a cure for longing, while To Cure Longing is a family portrait revealing history that was kept hidden due to historical and cultural circumstances. Both films are personal, almost private, but dare to touch the intergenerational wound that, in some respect, we all carry with us as old secrets that we rarely try to uncover.

A reception will precede this film at 6:30PM in the Ruby Lounge.
