Jamón & Halal: al-Andalus, Andalucía, and Tolerance

Contemporary writers and filmmakers from Spain and the Arab world continue to invoke and rewrite cultural narratives about the interfaith and intercultural contact that took place in medieval Iberia. Against this backdrop, how does the legacy of that period-the afterlives of al-Andalus-play out in the life of a small Andalusian town that is not only viewed as an integral part of the Moorish legacy, but is home to both European converts to Islam and North African immigrants? And what can this case study of the afterlives of al-Andalus tell us about identity formation and tolerance?
