Faculty Recital: Susan Fancher, saxophone; Rachael Elliott, bassoon; and Jane Hawkins, piano
Poulenc's "Trio for soprano saxophone, bassoon and piano" and other works. A sought-after performer of new music, Susan Fancher has premiered dozens of new works for saxophone. Last season, she performed Hilary Tann's "Shakkei" for soprano saxophone and orchestra at the North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial National Conference and performed the premiere of "Concerto for soprano saxophone and orchestra" by Mark Engebretson (written with the support of a North Carolina Artist Fellowship) in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Rachael Elliott is active in classical, new music, improvised and rock/pop settings. She is a founding member of the genre-bending new music group, Clogs. During the past decade, she has recorded five acclaimed albums with Clogs and appeared throughout the US, Europe and Australia. Clogs' most recent album, The Creatures in the Garden of Lady Walton, was cited by NPR Music as "one of the most evocative and appealing records of the year, in any genre." Jane Hawkins has appeared with the Dorian Wind Quintet, the Ciompi String Quartet, the Chicago Symphony Chamber Players, and the American Chamber Players at the Library of Congress. As resident pianist and faculty member at Musicorda Music Festival, she has performed in concert with violinists James Buswell, Kenneth Goldsmith and Masuko Ushioda, and cellists Ronald Leonard, Norman Fisher and Phillip Mueller. Hawkins is Chair of the Department of Music at Duke; all three serve on the faculty.
