Lecture: "Anti-Muslim Prejudice in the West"
This presentation explores anti-Muslim prejudice in Europe and the USA. It argues that it is important to understand the long standing tropes that cause us to misunderstand present day manifestations of Islam amongst European and American Muslims. For example, not long ago, images of veiled Muslim women raised questions because they were a central part of orientalist discourse on Islam and the West. These prejudices are now recurring in our debates about European and American Muslim women who wear the Islamic veil. This talk also examines the political mobilisation against European and American Muslims that has been systematically organised through links between US and European political actors and institutions.Funding for this lecture is provided by the British Council, Our Shared Future initiative. This event is cosponsored by the Duke-UNC Consortium for Middle East Studies.
