Patrick W. Galbraith earned his PhD in Information Studies at the University of Tokyo, and is currently pursuing a second PhD in Cultural Anthropology at Duke. He examines the phenomenon in terms of affective labor, alternative intimacy and fantasy role-play, which opens up the potential for doing sex and gender differently in post-millennial Japan.
