Presentation by artist in residence, filmmaker Malek Shafi'i

Presentation by documentary filmmaker Malek Shafi'i, an artist-in-residence this fall at the Center for Documentary Studies. Shafi'i supports independent filmmakers in his home country of Afghanistan as director of BASA Film (Afghanistan Cinema Club); members co-produce documentary and narrative films; organize filmmaking courses, public screenings, and festivals, including the Autumn Human Rights Festival; and support foreign production teams inside Afghanistan, among other activities. Shafi'i will discuss the origins and activities of BASA as well as his newest film, "Mohtarama," which explores the nascent women's movement in Afghanistan and its struggle for basic political, social, and domestic rights.
