Witnessing History: Duke Students Reflect on the Egyptian Runoff
DukeEngage Cairo 2012 students witnessed the run-off elections between the current Egyptian President Muhammed Morsi and the former Primer Minister of President Husni Mubrak, Ahmed Shafik. This was the first free and fair election in the history of Egypt. It was historic in its uniqueness, political anxiety and end result. This panel of DukeEngagers will revisit and share their unique experience regarding the elections.Mbaye Lo is Assistant Professor of the Practice, Asian & Middle Eastern Studies; Professor of Arabic; and Duke Islamic Studies Center (DISC) faculty member at Duke University. Lo¿s research interests include the sociology of Islam and theories of civil society. Lo served as co-faculty director with Professor Bruce Lawrence of the Duke in the Arab World Summer Program this summer, and his fifth consecutive year as faculty director for the DukeEngage Egypt student civic engagement program.
