Schultz, PhD is Professor of English and the Medical Humanities, and Director of Literature at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, the urban medical campus of Indiana University. She comes to the medical humanities by way of an interest in narrative forms and the hospital as a site of social and political interaction. Her publications include Women at the Front (University of North Carolina, 2004), her study of gender and relief work in American Civil War military hospitals, and This Birth Place of Souls (Oxford), an annotated edition of one of the last extant nursing diaries from the Civil War. She is the editor of Cancer Stories (2009) and co-editor of Nursing History and Humanities, a new book series published by Manchester University Press. Her current projects concern the histories of nursing and public health and issues surrounding cancer diagnosis.
