Uganda: Two Sides to Life

Given that the continent of Africa, which has fifty-four (54) countries, has often been stereotyped as a mystic jungle, replete with Tarzan swinging through the air, the Mary Lou Williams Center has a desire to "clear the air" by offering this exhibit. "Two Sides To Life" seeks to show an African American photographer who experiences one of the many African countries...UGANDA. In his pictures, we see both the contradiction of capturing the images that have been made cliché and images that speak to a deeper diasporic connection. How does one photograph people who remind you of yourself? How do you photograph land where your ancestors might have lived and raised families? These questions are seminal for all people who understand that we are all connected, even as race complicates how we live. Join us in reflection...as "The Pearl of Africa" shows us ourselves.
