This mini-symposium focuses on composer Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel, specifically Duke graduate student Angela Mace's discovery that the "Easter Sonata" for piano, previously attributed to Felix Mendelssohn, was actually composed by Fanny Hensel. Susan Youens (Notre Dame) will present the paper, "Fanny, Clara, and Heinrich." R. Larry Todd (Duke) and Angela Mace will present short talks on the "Easter Sonata" followed by a discussion.Susan Youens is J.W. Van Gorkom Professor of Music at the University of Notre Dame. She specializes in 19th century German music, including Franz Schubert, Hugo Wolf, and lieder.R. Larry Todd is Arts & Sciences Professor of Music at Duke. A leading Mendelssohn scholar, Todd is the author of "Mendelssohn: A Life in Music" and "Fanny Hensel, the Other Mendelssohn."Angela R. Mace is a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at Duke. She is writing her dissertation "Fanny Hensel, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, and the Formation of the 'Mendelssohnian' Style." Mace revised and enlarged J. Michael Cooper's "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: A Research and Information Guide" for the Routledge series (2011). She is co-editor, with Nicole Grimes, of "Mendelssohn Perspectives" for Ashgate Press (forthcoming, 2012).ANDREA LAM OF THE CLAREMONT TRIO WILL PERFORM THE EASTER SONATA AT 8 PM on September 7 in the Nelson Music Room, presented by Duke Performances.
