Presentation by artist-in-residence, Afghan photographer Zalmai

Talk and presentation on his overall body of work by Afghan photographer Zalmai, who received the 2011 Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund grant for his series "Walking in Quicksand: Afghan Refugees in Greece" (on view at the John Hope Franklin Center through September 28). He will be in residence at Duke's Center for International Studies September 17-21 as part of a partnership with the Magnum Foundation's Emergency Fund Program to run a week-long residency for Emergency Fund grantees; the goal is to connect international photographers with Duke faculty and students to encourage the practice of exploring deeply rooted social issues through photography.Zalmai has been documenting his native country since the 1990s. For the past several years, he has also been photographing the plight of Afghan refugees throughout the world, most recently in Greece, where that country's recent financial catastrophes have contributed to harsh, xenophobic attitudes and policies. As the first entry point into Europe from the Middle East, Greece receives among the largest number of Afghani migrants and asylum seekers in Europe, many of them now trapped in that country's deteriorating, dysfunctional asylum system.
