Public talk on Monday, Sept. 24 from 12:00-1:00 pm with Capoeira practitioner and scholar TJ Desch-Obi. Perkins Library 217. Professor Desch-Obi received his doctorate in African history from UCLA. He is presently completing a manuscript that explores cultural transmissions between Africa and the Americas through the lens of African martial arts. Desch-Obi has competitive credentials in martial arts and thus blends social history with cultural practice. He has been doing research¿including extensive fieldwork in Africa¿on the topic since his days at Harvard. He is West African but specializes in the history of Central Africa and the African Diaspora.
