Film Screening--"Basquiat" (Julian Schnabel, 1996, 108 min, USA, in English, Color, DVD). -- Painter Julian Schnabel's feature is a biopic about the meteoric rise of graffiti artist Jean-Michel Basquiat who became famous in 1981 and died seven years later. Starting out as a street artist, living in Thompkins Square Park in a cardboard box, Jean-Michel is "discovered" by Andy Warhol's art world and becomes a star. But success has a high price, and Basquiat pays with friendship, love, and eventually, his life. Starring Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, David Bowie as Andy Warhol, and Tony Award-winner Jeffrey Wright (Angels in America) as Basquiat. With Willem Dafoe, Courtney Love, Parker Posey and Tatum O'Neal and music by David Bowie, Van Morrison and Tom Waits. -- Part of "'80s to the M-M-M-Max" - a free film series to complement the exhibition "Time Capsule, Age 13 to 21: The Contemporary Art Collection of Jason Rubell."
