RCR Forum-"Moral Development and the Shadow Scholar"
Rhonda Sutton, PhD, LPC, Former Director, NCSU Office of Postdoctoral AffairsAdjunct professor of Counselor Education, NCSUOwner, InnerSights Counseling and Consultation, Inc. The Shadow Scholar is the story of a writer who makes his living churning out papers for a custom-essay company. He describes graduate and undergraduate students engaging in rampant cheating and plagiarism. Dr. Sutton, Director of the NCSU Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and adjunct assistant professor of Counselor Education, will discuss what The Shadow Scholar means for students and instructors who are confronted by cheating, plagiarism, and research misconduct. She also will provide an overview of moral development and how this concept applies to the issues raised in article. Participants will be required to read The Shadow Scholar from the November 12, 2010 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education prior to attending this discussion (http://chronicle.com/article/The-Shadow-Scholar/125329/). After this workshop, participants will be able to:- discuss moral development - discuss reasons to apply moral development concepts to teaching, learning, academic and research expectations - explore how to incorporate strategies both inside and outside the classroom that thwart academic and research misconduct and poor scholarly work.
