Between Market and Nation: The People Who Leave North Korea
Sponsor(s): Asian & Middle Eastern Studies (AMES)
Refugees, defectors, workers, brides...the people who leave North Korea. Every year, two-thousand of them make it to South Korea, where they receive many benefits. But many more do not choose South Korea as their final destination. They remain in China undocumented; some roam the streets of Bangkok; some make their way to Australia to begin a new life. This talk is about the transnational situation of these people, a situation created by market forces and national laws. Also considered is the history of North Korea's international migration that began after the Korean War. Contact: 919-668-2603.
