Welcome reception for artist-in-residence, filmmaker Malek Shafi'i

Reception for documentary filmmaker Malek Shafi'i, who will be an artist-in-residence this fall at the Center for Documentary Studies. Shafi'i supports independent filmmakers in his home country of Afghanistan as director of BASA Film (Afghanistan Cinema Club); members co-produce documentary and narrative films; organize filmmaking courses, public screenings, and festivals, including the Autumn Human Rights Festival; and support foreign production teams inside Afghanistan, among other activities. His newest film, "Mohtarama," explores the nascent women's movement in Afghanistan and its struggle for basic political, social, and domestic rights.
