Feminist Identity Construction in Virtual Communities w/ Erin Stephens, PhD candidate in Sociology at George Mason University
Sponsor(s): Women's Center
Develle Dish offers an interesting case study to understand not only how current generations of college women relate to feminism, but also how technology creates a new space for the development of identities that are historically grounded in collective understandings. Unlike most blogs, DD also exists in the physical world, resulting in a dynamic relationship where anonymous monikers and thoughts only expressed in cyberspace contribute to real encounters and struggles at Duke, and vise versa. This talk will explore how feminist identity and community is imagined, stretched, and constructed between virtual and physical spaces.
