Documentary Writer Series: Ben Miller on "River Bend Chronicle"
The Documentary Writers Series is a regular showcase of nonfiction authors who write great, thoroughly documented and artfully observed stories about the world. The Center for Documentary Studies presents these authors in readings and in other kinds of literary performances around Durham as part of the Center's commitment to find audiences for new and notable work by documentary artistsFrom a writer with keen powers of observation comes "River Bend Chronicle: The Junkification of a Boyhood Idyll Amid the Curious Glory of Urban Iowa." Ben Miller's evocation of his eccentric family's tangled connections--between themselves, an unlikely cast of locals, and a seldom-documented urban Iowa, one not of cows and cornstalks but of thrift stores, TV dinners, and bridges spanning the muddy sprawl of the Mississippi River--is by turns uplifting and harrowing. THIS EVENT WILL BE AT THE REGULATOR BOOKSHOP, 720 NINTH ST., DURHAM, NC
