"Expanding the Frame on Integrated Care: Inviting Chaplains into Mental Health Care Systems"
Dr. Jason Nieuwsma is a clinical psychologist at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) in Durham, North Carolina. He serves as the Associate Director for the national VA Mental Health and Chaplaincy Program, and he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. Nieuwsma completed his undergraduate education at Taylor University and his graduate training at the University of Wyoming. He completed his clinical internship at the Durham VA Medical Center and was a postdoctoral fellow with the VA Mid-Atlantic MIRECC / Duke University Medical Center. In his recent work, Dr. Nieuwsma has served as lead and co-lead on multiple national-level projects aimed at more effectively integrating chaplaincy and mental health care services in VA and the military.
