Ciompi Quartet Concert no. 3
Cost: $20; $10 Duke students. Visit dukeperformances.org for tickets.
The season's third concert echoes its second with a modern masterpiece bookended by Beethoven and Brahms. The Ciompi pairs the first string quartet Beethoven wrote, his delightful opus 18 in D Major, with John Adams' first classic, the ever-shifting minimalist piece Shaker Loops (the latter featuring contributions from the Duke Department of Music's most talented students). The evening closes with Brahms' stormy and emotional first quartet, which he published only after a decade of experiments, revisions, and polishing. Program: Brahms: String Quartet no. 3 in B-flat major, Op. 67; Joel Feigin: Mosaic in Two Panels for String Quartet; Beethoven: Septet in e-Flat major, Op. 20 (with Allan Ware and local musicians)
