Ocean Crossings: Borders and Coasts
"Ocean Crossings" is a new reading group whose purpose is to explore and answer questions surrounding bodies of water. In our inaugural year, we will host a series of meetings and lectures focused on questions of migration across all areas and times. We would like to invite you to our first meeting: "Islands, Peninsulas, and Archipelagos" where we will consider the geopolitics of borders and coasts. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 9th, in SocSci 124 from 12-2 pm. Lunch and refreshments will be provided courtesy of Duke University Middle Eastern Studies Center. We will be discussing 3 short excerpts from David Abulafia's The Great Sea, Antonio Benitez Rojo's The Repeating Island, and Sandro Mezzadra's Border as Method. Please e-mail the organizers for the texts at (oceancrossings@duke.edu
