Renowned artist and cultural activist Chris Jordan will preview a work-in-progress version of his film project documenting the plight of thousands of albatrosses who mistake floating plastic trash for food. Returning to the island over several the years has given Jordan an intimate view of the tragedy caused by our waste and "love of plastic." This viewing will give the audience a preview of the Jordan's soon-to-be-released film, and an opportunity to hear how he has been compelled to show the unrelenting devastation unfolding, even as you watch the film. (Midway: Message from the Gyre, was screened this past September at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.) Jordan will also participate in a panel discussion about sustainability with environmental artist Bryant Holsenbeck and Duke doctoral student Pinar Yoldas on Wednesday, October 30 at 7pm, at the Center for Documentary Studies. Both the screening and panel are part of the annual Duke Arts Festival, which this year focuses on sustainability. The 2013 Duke Arts Festival ARTS + Sustainability is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts, Duke Alumni Association, DEMAN (Duke Entertainment, Media and the Arts Network). Duke Sustainability, Duke Recycling Services, duARTs, visArts, and Duke Career Center.
