Author Workshop on Science Studies AS Area Studies

Michitake Aso (History, University at Albany) will be present as we discuss his article, "Patriotic hygiene: Tracing new places of knowledge production about malaria in Vietnam, 1919-75". Professor Aso's article analyzes how knowledge production about malaria articulated with colonial and postcolonial state projects concerning race, war, hygiene, rubber-production and national identity. Our discussion with the author is part of an on-going conversation about the importance of region - specifically, sites in Asia - to biomedical and scientific practice.
