Informatics Research Seminar

The American Board of Medical Specialties approved Clinical Informatics as a clinical subspecialty in 2011. The first board examination was offered in late 2013, and 445 physicians passed the exam. However, most physicians are unfamiliar with clinical informatics as a medical specialty, and even physicians who passed the exam frequently have a hard time describing, in a concise manner, what they bring to EHR implementations and medical care. This lecture will describe the roles of clinical informaticians in healthcare organizations, the gap between current medical education offerings and what is needed for an effective clinical informatics workforce, current educational offerings, and the certification process.
