Mix and Mingle with Professional and Amateur Translators

To connect students of Spanish 310 (Advanced Spanish Translation) and the public with the professional community of translators and interpreters, Joan Munné and Melissa Simmermeyer have organized a series of conversations titled Making the Invisible Visible. Despite the pervasiveness of translation in today's globalized world, even highly educated people often forget that without the skilled intellectual work of translators and interpreters, most texts, peoples, and regions of the world would be inaccessible to those who speak other languages. In the first conversation, interpreters Grisel Díaz and Jackie Metivier speak about collaboration in their professional community, and the rewards and considerable challenges of interpretation. John Milan and Mike Collins illustrate the evolving role that computer-assisted translation tools are playing in the field in the second conversation. Eileen Chow and Sarah Alys Lindholm conclude the series of conversations with a discussion of their experiences and expertise translating audiovisual media. Finally, to conclude the semester, students of Duke's translation courses and all members of the community interested in translation are invited to meet and talk to translators and interpreters from North Carolina in an informal mixer.
