Opening event: Exhibit reception for "Be Still: A Storefront Church in Durham," photographs by Kristin Bedford
MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts student Kristin Bedford's images of Apostolic Deliverance Rebirth Outreach Ministries, a storefront church in East Durham, taken with the church's permission over the course of ten months in 2012-2013. "Remnants of the building's earlier inhabitants--a bank vault, utility closets, electrical wiring--are always in sight," says Bedford. "There are no traditional architectural cues, like stained glass windows or vaulted ceilings, to kindle a religious experience. The bare interiors make more visible the gentle gestures of faith. Whatever spirit is in the room belongs solely to the worshippers." Exhibit and reception is in the Allen Building Gallery, 2d floor. Remarks by MFA in Experimental and Documentary Arts director Tom Rankin.
