Transcripts & Lifescripts

A central theme for Duke Service-Learning in 2013-2014 is a phrase borrowed from Dean Laurie Patton: ¿Transcripts & Lifescripts.¿ Focusing on this theme reflects our commitment to support students as they create an educational experience that is inclusive of the curricular and co-curricular.We believe we are best positioned to support students by providing opportunities for colleagues to discuss and debate our own commitments to integrative education. We would like to turn to scholars whose work can provoke our thinking, beginning with Parker Palmer and Arthur Zajonc¿s 2010 text The Heart of Higher Education: A Call to Renewal ¿ Transforming the Academy through Collegial Conversations. We invite you to join us for a series of Thursday evening conversations framed by this text, starting on Nov. 19th. We'll gather at 5:30 for dinner and conversation to end by 7:30p. At some point, we also hope to gather with a student group focusing on another Palmer text for conversation. We¿ll provide participants a copy of the book and recommend excerpts to frame each conversation; we do not, however, want reading the book to be a condition of participation. We¿re most interested in the conversation and ideas of how each of us can and does develop our commitments to pursue experiences that integrate our own transcripts & lifescripts; support students on their path to integrative education; and position the University to remove barriers to integrative teaching and learning at Duke.
