Critical Thinking in the Public Square

Event Image
Thursday, January 16, 2014
1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Jim Naughton and Rebecca Wilson
Faculty Writing Series

Conventional wisdom says that American public discourse is becoming shallower, but in recent years public thought leaders like Melissa Harris-Perry (Tulane, MSNBC Host), Samantha Power (US Ambassador to the United Nations, formerly at Kennedy School of Government at Harvard), Freeman Dyson (retired from the Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton), and even theologian Reinhold Niebuhr have shaped and deepened our cultural and political discourse in significant and far-reaching ways. Imam Abdullah Antepli, Richard Brodhead, Nick Carnes, Cathy Davidson, Mark Anthony Neal, Laurie Patton and other Duke scholars are leading the efforts on our own campus to generate a greater exchange between the university and the broader world, contributing to and deepening critical thinking in the public sphere. In this workshop, we will discuss writing for audiences outside the academy and pitching your work to the news media that engage them, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Guardian (UK), the Atlantic, Slate, Salon, and Huffington Post. All Duke faculty and graduate students are welcome. A light lunch will be available starting at 12:45. Click "More Information" below to visit the event website and register.
