Kiah Glenn "A Loud Silence: Sound In the Islamic Context and What it Means for Sex and Gender"Kiah Glenn will discuss the gender implications that the practice of calling the athan in Muslim communities. The athan, is the call to prayer, made five times a day in Muslim homes, mosques and communities. This call to prayer is made exclusively by Muslim men. This religious ritual is not only an example of sound being used to demarcate space and place, as understood by Isaac Weiner, but Glenn argues that it does other work as well, that the athan, because it is only made by men, also marks out gender ,gender lines, and their spaces. Dinner will be served. RSVP required to rachel.greenspan@duke.edu
