"From crime waves to segregation: what we can learn from basic PDE"The use of PDE models to describe complex systems in the social sciences, such as socio-economic segregation and crime, has been popularized during the past decade. In this talk I will introduce some PDE models which can be seen as basic models for a variety of social phenomena. I will then discuss how these models can be used to explore and gain understanding of the real-world systems they describe. For example, we learn that a populations innate views toward criminal activity can play a significant role in the prevention of crime-wave propagation.
