Israeli Documentary Series presents: The Artist's Daughter
The Israeli Documentary Series presents "The Artist's Daughter" (2022, runtime 60 min, directors Margarita Linton and Yaniv Linton).
Long estranged from her father, an esteemed Israeli painter, the filmmaker visits an exhibition of his most stirring and revealing self-portraits in Tel Aviv. Hoping that the exhibition will deepen her understanding of him as a person and as an artist-and that it will serve as the catalyst that reignites the connection between them-she endeavors to capture it all on film. As she unearths a lifetime of her feelings of neglect through unguarded conversations with other members of her family, she begins to understand just how much his absence has eroded her sense of self. And though her father's love eludes her, she remains masterfully determined to make meaning out of the void.
This semester, the screenings are in dialogue with one another and present two very different stories about fatherhood and filiality in the late 20th and early 21st century. The Artist's Daughter, Oil on Canvas, is essentially an experiment in the ways in which art - cinema and visual arts - can offer a substitute and a cure for longing, while To Cure Longing is a family portrait revealing history that was kept hidden due to historical and cultural circumstances. Both films are personal, almost private, but dare to touch the intergenerational wound that, in some respect, we all carry with us as old secrets that we rarely try to uncover.
A reception will precede this film at 6:30PM in the Ruby Lounge.
