12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
Laura DelPrato, Charlottesville, Virginia

Discover a unique art form in this interactive introduction to the art and science of light painting photography. Light painting is the art of choreographing and recording the movement of light through long exposure photography. In this presentation, you will learn about the key functions of light painting art and how the science behind light painting influences art theory. You will also get to play with light through a live light painting demo!

Laura DelPrato is an artist and educator who illuminates inspiration through light painting photography. Leveraging her master's degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, she supports people to embody their unique gifts through the mindful savoring of character strengths that results in inspirational essence portraits. She has over 15 years of experience creating, writing, and facilitating workshops about light painting that encourage participants to cultivate their creative potential.

Laura wrote her undergraduate thesis on the art of light painting and published key ideas from it in an academic journal called Leadership, Popular Culture, and Social Change. Karolina, from her Illuminating Inspiration portrait series, was showcased in the 2014 Light Painting World Exhibition. Furthermore, she collaborated with 11 light painters to achieve the first light painting Guinness World Record.

Since then, Laura has led multiple interactive light painting workshops for various organizations and collaborated with a team of light painters to introduce light painting at Duke University in 2022. Most recently, she was a guest speaker on Light Painting Brushes Live to elevate light painting as an independent art form.

Laura looks forward to sharing the art and science of light painting with the Duke community!
